SSC CGL Syllabus & Exam Pattern 2026 Explained

The Staff Selection Commission Combined Graduate Level (SSC CGL) is often regarded as the "Mini IAS" exam in India. It recruits graduates for Group B and Group C posts in various prestigious ministries like MEA, CBI, Income Tax, and Customs.

The Revised Exam Pattern

The SSC CGL now consists of only two tiers (Tier-I and Tier-II). The physical descriptive paper (Tier-III) and standalone document verification by SSC have been abolished.

Tier-I (Qualifying in Nature)

Tier-I remains a Computer Based Test (CBT), but its marks are no longer added to the final merit. It is strictly a qualifying screening test.

• General Intelligence & Reasoning: 25 Questions (50 Marks)
• General Awareness: 25 Questions (50 Marks)
• Quantitative Aptitude: 25 Questions (50 Marks)
• English Comprehension: 25 Questions (50 Marks)
• Total Time: 60 Minutes (Negative marking of 0.50 marks for each wrong answer).

Tier-II (The Merit Decider)

This is where the real battle lies. Tier-II is conducted on a single day and includes three sections.

Session-I (2 Hours 15 Minutes)

Section-I: Mathematical Abilities & Reasoning

• Module-I: Mathematics (30 Questions, 90 Marks)
• Module-II: Reasoning (30 Questions, 90 Marks)
• Total Time: 1 Hour

Section-II: English Language & General Awareness

• Module-I: English (45 Questions, 135 Marks)
• Module-II: General Awareness (25 Questions, 75 Marks)
• Total Time: 1 Hour

Section-III: Computer Knowledge Test

• Module-I: Computer Basics (20 Questions, 60 Marks)
• Total Time: 15 Minutes (Qualifying but mandatory)

Session-II (15 Minutes)

Section-III: Data Entry Speed Test (DEST)

• A typing test of 2000 key depressions in 15 minutes. It is qualifying in nature but failing it means direct disqualification from all posts.

Key Changes to Note

1. Weightage of English: English now carries the highest weightage (135 marks) in the final merit. Reading comprehension and vocabulary are more crucial than ever.
2. Reasoning & GK in Tier II: In the old pattern, Tier II only had Maths and English. Now, Reasoning and General Awareness play a huge role in your final selection.
3. Computer & Typing: Do not ignore typing. Thousand of high-scoring candidates fail CGL because they neglected the computer module and typing tests.
